Our story began in 2021, following a call for proposals issued by the Lodève City Council. A group of residents came together and formed an association to save an old farm and its land, which were threatened by real estate development. The “Green Island” project was presented to the city council and selected for its quality and social innovation.
A participatory housing and educational garden project in Lodève—Our challenge in the face of developers’ projects: to create 22 housing units, 50% of which will be affordable housing, while preserving 6,000 square meters of heritage garden and the riverbank, all in alignment with local initiatives and the region.
In order to preserve nearly the entire garden, with a breakdown of 10% built area and 90% of garden space, the project plans to renovate the existing farmhouse and build an extension on the site of the former barn.
We aim to construct and renovate the buildings in an eco-friendly manner:
- By reducing the size of the units to account for shared spaces: common room, laundry room, guest rooms, workshop…
- By hiring local craftsmen specialized in eco-friendly construction and the use of bio-based materials, and by working with local platforms for the reuse of construction materials.
- By creating a bioclimatic building with rainwater harvesting and a composting station.
There are numerous opportunities for interaction between the Green Island and the surrounding community: cultural events, permaculture workshops, school visits…
