Microland is a nonprofit organization founded in 2015 by Gérard Filippi, an entomologist and naturalist. Our NGO helps raise awareness of the biodiversity of threatened ecosystems by collaborating with local communities in the biodiversity archipelago of São Tomé and Príncipe.
In partnership with the Consulate of São Tomé and Príncipe in Marseille, OPIE, and BirdLife International, Microland is organizing this multi-year project, with two missions per year. Our actions symbolize the promise of a colossal leap forward in the ecological understanding of the territory, through our "Archipelago of Biodiversity" project.
Our vision: To preserve, enhance, and develop the integrity of São Tomé and Príncipe’s unique natural heritage.
Our mission: Raising awareness of biodiversity, particularly through the discovery of entomology, is the guiding principle of Microland. Convinced that environmental issues are closely linked to those of sharing scientific knowledge, Microland is committed to implementing initiatives to promote biodiversity.
Through scientific approaches tailored to each natural environment, Microland’s initiatives aim to reduce the stress caused by climate change. The authenticity and richness of these mysterious volcanic islands are teeming with endemic species and those new to science, which we must urgently catalog to better protect them. To carry out our missions, we work closely with local communities across the archipelago as well as a large number of scientific experts.
Our goal: Microland has a simple goal: to help local communities value and conserve the biodiversity that surrounds them. To achieve this, we design projects on a human scale that respect the environment, drawing on our extensive naturalist experience and knowledge of the living world. We provide technical, thematic, and logistical support to bolster the local economy on a very small scale and promote the conservation of the natural environment.
