Since the 1992 Rio de Janeiro Summit, biological diversity has ceased to be the exclusive domain of biologists: the concept of biodiversity now encompasses the relationships between the biological world and human societies. Diversity is now at the heart of concerns regarding sustainable development and conservation. The Amazon, regarded as a region of immense species richness, has long been the object of intense interest but now raises concerns: what once seemed like an inexhaustible natural resource now appears to us as biodiversity in peril. But how can we assess the state and changes in biodiversity across this vast region? What are the effects of the numerous public development and conservation policies that have proliferated there in recent decades? This book first presents the complexity of several local Amazonian situations—from indigenous agricultural systems to frontier areas associated with extensive livestock farming. Satellite imagery is then used to map the dynamics of plant biodiversity in space and time based on a landscape analysis and an estimation of their complexity through a multidisciplinary approach. Landscape transformations and the concomitant variations in biodiversity are also linked to public policies and private actions. The methodological approach, deliberately simple, was developed with the aim of being applicable to other tropical forest areas.
