INTRODUCTION
Small dams have become an indispensable feature of West African landscapes. Small in scale yet numerous and widely scattered, they shape the landscape, generating a diverse array of resources. They effectively bring together stakeholders and uses that are often complementary, sometimes competing, and potentially antagonistic. As a result, they drive social transformations marked by institutional reorganizations and new rules governing access to ecosystems and resources. Recognized and valued by local communities as instruments of development, their numbers continue to rise. To assess the benefits and risks associated with these developments, this book, which focuses on small dams in northern Côte d’Ivoire, provides a multidisciplinary overview. Intended for all researchers and planners concerned with the sustainable development of the Sudano-Sahelian savannas, it also invites a broader reflection on the ecological and social changes linked to valley development.
