INTRODUCTION
The abundance, uniqueness, and diversity of plant species in Côte d’Ivoire have enabled the Ivorian people to develop a wide range of knowledge regarding plant-based substances, including, in particular, their medical, cosmetic, aromatic, and culinary uses. However, Ivorian biodiversity has been undergoing constant degradation for several decades, with forest cover increasingly under threat. The sustainable use of Ivorian natural resources and the benefits for the population are thus compromised.
In a context where ecological, health, economic, and cultural challenges are becoming increasingly urgent, this book aims, on the one hand, to provide an overview of the knowledge, uses, practices, and ecosystems related to Ivorian plant substances and, on the other hand, to provide avenues for reflection and concrete recommendations to address the range of contemporary societal challenges, namely the preservation of the environment and biodiversity while ensuring the health of the population and the country’s economic development.
