Description

In tropical mountainous regions, where the risk of erosion is naturally high, the cultivation of land exacerbates these processes. Thus, the intensively farmed slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes are experiencing erosion that affects soil fertility and, consequently, agricultural production—on which small-scale farmers (minifundio) depend for their food. There is an urgent need to implement effective erosion control measures adapted to the socio-economic conditions of the population. However, knowledge regarding erosion and erosion control in the tropics, particularly in mountainous areas, remains fragmented, as scientists have long prioritized the theoretical study of these processes. The objective of the research presented in this book is to propose an approach that combines basic and applied research to enable the practical implementation of erosion control methods. This study was conducted in three stages: erosion diagnosis, measurement of processes, and the proposal and validation of erosion control methods. Conducted at the local and smallholder plot levels, following a formative and participatory approach involving farmers, researchers, and decision-makers, it demonstrates that erosion control is possible in the Andean highlands. This approach can serve as a model for laying the foundations of sustainable mountain agriculture in tropical environments. This book is intended for academics and researchers in geography, soil science, hydrology, and agronomy, and, due to its didactic presentation, for students as well as decision-makers.

IRD: a French multidisciplinary public research organization that, for over 80 years, has been engaged in equitable partnerships with countries in the Global South and in the French Overseas Territories.

As a key player in the international development agenda, it prioritizes the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

Together, the Institute’s scientists and partners propose concrete solutions to address the global challenges facing societies and the planet. This win-win relationship makes science and innovation major drivers of development.
