Description

The Oceania Association, founded on December 7, 2017, is dedicated to studying and protecting cetaceans within the Polynesian sanctuary. As a group of committed enthusiasts, we strive to strengthen the bond between humans and nature.

Oceania initiates innovative projects dedicated to the preservation of cetaceans. These initiatives are organized around four main areas: scientific research, conservation, education, and training.

OUR PROJECTS

  • OCEAN WATCH 2024–2027: To improve knowledge of cetaceans in French Polynesia, as well as to identify and mitigate the human-induced threats they face, in order to make French Polynesia a key player in their conservation.
  • HONO TAI 2025: Census of cetacean species observable from land-based observation points around the island of Moorea.
  • OCEAN IA 2025–2026: Ocean IA deploys autonomous cameras equipped with AI to detect humpback whales in real time and alert ships. Objective: to reduce the risk of collisions in sensitive areas such as the Papeete and Vaiare channels.

OUR TRAINING PROGRAMS

  • - 'ARURU: A free training program for 18- to 25-year-olds, designed to introduce participants to the profession of marine mammal observer as well as other careers related to the marine environment.
  • - TAMAUMAU: A two-level training program that allows anyone to gain knowledge in cetology and provides the foundation to participate in a cetacean research program.

TEACHERS' CORNER

Our association, accredited by the DGEE, is fully committed to environmental education in schools in Tahiti and Moorea, as well as in more remote islands during our trips to other archipelagos in Polynesia. (program)
