Description

Objectives of the "Les Amis du Val de Leuzeu" Association

1 Protect and showcase the historical heritage

The heritage of Leuzeu consists primarily of the ruins that needed to be protected and restored, but also of a rich history, the result of extensive research that provided the content for Issue No. 1: Discovery.

2 Protect and enhance the environment

In addition to cleaning and planting flowers in the areas around the buildings, this project primarily focuses on the valley, where several initiatives are underway:

– the creation of ponds as part of a program approved by the Departmental Directorate of Territories to facilitate the reproduction of the fire salamander (a protected species)

– late mowing once a year (February) to maintain the valley as a meadow while protecting biodiversity.

– clearing the forest edge to encourage genetic selection of tree species and to facilitate the movement of large wildlife

– Contributing to the inventory of the valley’s floral diversity through frequent observations.

3 Welcoming Hikers and Walkers

The spirit of community service that drives the association’s members commits us to creating a welcoming environment for families and hikers:

– by providing tables, benches, and barbecues.

– by responding to requests from groups and those planning camping or backpacking trips.

4 Welcoming school groups

The association organizes “Art and Nature” discovery days for schools in the Ouche et Montagne community of communes.

5 Keeping alive the memory of the Maquis Liberté’s battles

The events of July 30, 1944, whose painful memories are still vivid in Urcy and Clémencey, are regularly commemorated:

– in 2014, marking the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Leuzeu, with the unveiling of a plaque and the publication of a Leuzeu booklet dedicated to this event.

– in 2024, a new commemoration for the 80th anniversary and a new publication enriched with recent research and testimonies: Special Issue of the Maquis Liberté.
