Description

Founded in 1990 in Biarritz by a group of surfers, it now comprises a network of 1,500 volunteers, 10,000 members, some 40 local chapters, and more than 40,000 supporters across Europe.

Surfrider Foundation is a global network of regional associations and local chapters present on every continent (USA, Europe, Japan, Australia, Latin America…).

Our organization’s initiatives

- Coastal Protection At the heart of Surfrider’s mission has always been a simple idea: to give everyone the opportunity to take action to preserve the oceans and coastlines.

No matter how you enjoy the coastline (sports, swimming, or walking), if you feel the need to take action to protect this heritage, then you’ll be right at home by joining the Surfrider Foundation Europe!

- Political Action: Thanks to its strong local presence and its ability to serve as an interface between the users it represents and public authorities, Surfrider has developed an advocacy approach based on four objectives:

- Contribute to the development and implementation of European Union policies aimed at resolving environmental issues.

- Build environmental expertise that is both empirical and scientific

- Drive societal change through innovative educational and communication programs

- Act as a mediator

- Educational Approach: Over the course of its existence, Surfrider Foundation Europe has acquired strong environmental competencies and developed genuine expertise in environmental education. The association has equipped itself to achieve its educational ambitions by creating an educational and awareness-raising structure: Surfrider Campus.

Located at the organization’s headquarters in Biarritz, it serves as a hub for the exchange of knowledge and expertise on coastal environments. This center for education and training in sustainable development is a venue for cultural and educational activities designed to introduce and deepen understanding of environmental issues.

Surfrider’s local action is organized around some fifty local groups spread across 12 European countries, with the aim of promoting these initiatives:

  • Raising awareness in schools,
  • Implementing environmental campaigns,
  • Organizing events,
  • Developing partnerships,
  • Strengthening the membership network,
