Description

Note: For trees purchased as "bare-root" plants, it is essential to keep the roots moist. They should be stored in a "growing medium"—a mixture of sand and moist potting soil—until they are planted.

1) Soil Aeration

It is recommended to loosen the soil in the area where the tree will be planted to a depth of about 60 cm as soon as the first autumn rains arrive. This will help the tree take root once planted.
You can use a broadfork or a spading fork.

Amending the soil with compost and wood chips

However, the most important step is to cover the soil before planting with a good layer of compost and/or wood chips (a product made from shredded branches).
Covering the loosened soil before planting can be done simply by spreading branches and various types of yard waste over it.

2) Size of the planting hole

  • - Using the appropriate tools (pickaxe, spade, shovel), dig a hole approximately 50–60

cm in diameter and H: 50–60 cm deep (see diagram below).

  • - It is also important to respect the order of the different soil layers during planting: do not mix the different soil horizons; replace the topsoil, which was set aside earlier, last during planting.

    3) Pralinage:

For bare-root trees, to stimulate root growth and protect the roots, dip the roots in a mixture called “Pralin” (clay, water, and potting soil/compost, or clay, water, and cow manure).

This mixture should be prepared in large containers, such as trash cans. Potted trees do not need this.

4) Planting:
