Challenges and Needs

The PROMISCES project (Preventing Recalcitrant Organic Mobile Industrial Chemicals for the Circular Economy in the Soil-Sediment-Water System)  is part of the momentum of the European Green Deal and the European Circular Economy Plan, with the ambition of contributing to the deployment of the circular economy by preventing industrial pollution.

 

To achieve this overall objective, the project:

  • provide knowledge regarding the monitoring of mobile and persistent pollutants (MPs) and their sources,
  • promote the prevention, mitigation, and remediation of these substances in the soil-sediment-water continuum,
  • and will co-develop, together with stakeholders, methodological tools and regulatory strategies for sustainable management within the framework of the EU’s Zero Pollution Action Plan.

 

A particular focus of PROMISCES will be perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS),  a group of substances of growing concern due to their accumulation in the environment and which pose a threat to human health, biodiversity, the environment, and the implementation of the circular economy for our natural resources.

 

The project will focus on several aspects of the circular economy:

  • semi-closed cycles for drinking water supply,
  • the reuse of wastewater for agricultural irrigation,
  • nutrient recovery from sewage sludge,
  • the recovery of dredged sediments,
  • urban soil remediation for new uses.

Funded by the European "Green Deal" program under Domain 8 "Pollution-free and non-toxic environment"

 

PROMISCES will develop analytical methods and toxicological assessment tools tailored to mobile and persistent pollutants 

PROMISCES will also develop innovative, sustainable, and cost-effective technologies for treating pollutants in water intended for human consumption, wastewater, etc.
