About Us

The Association for the Preservation of the Etang de Berre is a nonprofit organization (under the 1901 Law) headquartered in Berre l’Etang (Bouches-du-Rhône). Its mission is to promote the restoration of the Etang de Berre.

The ASEB’s ambitions can be broken down into four main objectives, all focused on the interests of its residents:

  • Restore the lagoon’s image among all members of the public
  • Restore a balanced functioning of the lagoon’s ecosystems and its shoreline
  • Improve the management of the lake’s shores
  • Develop uses currently limited by the ecological degradation of the environment

ASEB currently has about 500 members, mostly residents of Berre and the 10 surrounding towns, but not exclusively: other members do not live near the lagoon and sometimes even live far away from it, but all are aware that the Berre Lagoon can once again become a special place worthy of this magnificent site. At the beginning of the last century, it offered a quality of life that older residents still recall with nostalgia.

The goal is not to recreate the lagoon of the 1920s, which is undoubtedly somewhat idealized in our grandparents’ memories. Rather, it is to achieve a balanced ecosystem, restore a quality of life, and strengthen a source of social cohesion, firmly rooted in a 21st century committed to respecting its natural resources.
