Description

Le Panier de Léontine, a nonprofit organization under the French Law of 1901, is a social and community-based grocery store committed to sustainable development from social, economic, and environmental perspectives.

Economic solidarity: A dual pricing system is in place, allowing prices to be adjusted according to members’ incomes.  Beneficiary members, who are in precarious situations, have access to quality, local products at a lower cost: discounts ranging from 25% to 80% of the average market price.  Through their purchases, supportive members contribute to the grocery store’s operations, generating a portion of self-financing.

Social diversity: It’s a grocery store, but it’s also a place where interaction is fostered and mutual understanding encouraged. Different groups of people come together without stigmatization in a warm and friendly atmosphere.  The grocery store offers quality products to all its members and organizes events on health-related topics.

Eco-citizenship: Part of the supply comes from local producers through direct channels. A partnership with Biocoop allows the store to offer organic and fair-trade products for sale.  A bulk goods section raises awareness about reducing packaging. Information and activities for all members promote practices that help reduce environmental impact.

Le Panier de Léontine consists of two grocery stores, in Bourgoin and Villefontaine, with two teams of volunteers.  Several regular funders make this initiative possible: Secours Catholique, the CCAS of Bourgoin-Jallieu and Villefontaine, the cities of Bourgoin-Jallieu and Villefontaine, and the department.
