Jardilien: A Community Garden Based on Agroecology
Founded in 1998, the Jardilien association promotes community-based practices centered on agroecological gardening.
On an 8,000 m² plot, half of which is dedicated to vegetable farming, about sixty members—of all ages—grow their crops without pesticides or chemical fertilizers, respecting the living soil and biodiversity.
Each year, nearly four metric tons of seasonal vegetables are harvested there.
Jardilien is also a place for exchange, sharing, social connection, and passing on knowledge.
The sixty or so volunteers learn the basics of gardening, from seed to plate, and divide up the produce baskets based on the time they spend in the garden.
A portion of the harvest is also donated to charitable organizations. Thanks to financial support from the Departmental Council, the association also conducts weekly inclusive therapeutic activities for groups of people with disabilities. Building on its educational expertise in agroecology, Jardilien now hopes to launch new projects that benefit the local community.
