From the very beginning, the organization has also had a social mission: rooted in the Goutte d’Or neighborhood of Paris, it organizes job-training workshops for women living in the neighborhood’s emergency shelters.
Founded in 2008 by Márcia de Carvalho, the Chaussettes Orphelines association aims to:
- recycle textiles, particularly used and mismatched socks; -
foster social connections;
- promote social, economic, and cultural integration by sharing artisanal skills in textile recycling and fashion design.
Beneficiaries are trained in textile techniques (sewing, patchwork, knitting, crochet, embroidery), and the creations are showcased at exhibitions and fashion shows.
Trainees in the vocational training program receive support for internships in companies and for re-entering the workforce from specialized teams.
Since 2008, the Chaussettes Solidaires association has been recycling old socks by transforming them into new yarn to make new items, which it sells under its Chaussettes Orphelines brand.
