Technical Sheet: Increasing the Potential of a Cropland Field by Planting a Living Erosion Control Hedge

Ekolo Mundo does not control the feasibility or viability of the proposed solutions

Structure : Working Group on Desertification (WGD)

Solution proposed by : Cyril Mercier

Difficulty level :

# anti-erosion

Description

The primary purpose of establishing a living erosion-control hedge is to limit damage caused by rainwater in the field. This involves planting shrubs in a linear pattern over several meters around the field or between crops (alley cropping).

Background

No specific information*, but it is a traditional technique in many countries

Location

Burkina Faso, among others*

Effects of the technique

Increases crop yields Reduces soil loss due to water and wind erosion Allows rainwater to infiltrate the soil Traps mineral-rich sediments and organic matter carried by water Protects crops from wind and animals (hedges around the field) Provides a habitat for beneficial wildlife

The Desertification Working Group is a network of French actors in international solidarity and development committed to combating desertification, led by CARI
