Purpose of the guide
The result of a joint effort between the Land Working Group of the National Association of Third Places and France Tiers-Lieux, this guide aims to support project leaders in addressing land management challenges and to strengthen the capacity of engaged communities to freely manage their spaces for necessary modifications, construction, and uses.
This land use guide is intended to present the major land and real estate challenges and issues faced by collectives that establish and run third places across the country.
It is intended for third-place stakeholders as well as the public sector actors who support them.
It presents real estate arrangements implemented by certain project leaders, while highlighting the diversity of approaches (leasing, acquisition, and collective ownership) and without claiming to provide the ideal solution for a third-place project.
It presents legal, financial, and decision-making tools intended for third-place stakeholders and anyone interested in real estate and land issues.
This guide also provides insights into the possible positions taken by public stakeholders.
