Description

INTRODUCTION

In a world facing climate change and pandemics linked to the destruction of natural environments, the challenges associated with biodiversity conservation are now well known and have led to major international agreements, such as the Nagoya Protocol.

In this global context, research conducted in the Global South is of paramount importance. The contributions written here by researchers from Africa, the Indian Ocean, Southeast Asia, and Europe reflect the vitality of biodiversity research in French-speaking intertropical countries.

Documenting the diversity of local plant ecosystems, gaining a better understanding of traditional knowledge and the folk uses of plants or fungi, promoting the role of botanical collections, as well as identifying responsible economic value chains, sustainably managing ecosystems and their resources, developing strategic tools for science-based environmental governance, and, finally, demonstrating the need for citizen engagement and the involvement of all relevant stakeholders—these are the major themes explored here.

This collective work will be of interest to all those working on the biodiversity of intertropical ecosystems. It underscores the need for action-oriented science in the service of sustainable development.
