Description

INTRODUCTION

Environmental policies in Madagascar, particularly those aimed at biodiversity conservation, are driving new spatial reorganizations and altering the relationship between a range of authorities and local knowledge in rural areas. Drawing on extensive fieldwork, this book analyzes agricultural practices and village strategies in response to conservation efforts. Focusing on the Betsileo-Tanàla forest corridor, a strategic hub of national environmental policy, the book highlights the reconfigurations of rural life imposed by the new ecological dimension of development. It also raises the crucial question of poverty alleviation within this environmental context. This detailed analysis, based on new and original data, will be of interest to all those concerned with the relationship between biodiversity management and rural development, in Madagascar and more broadly in the Global South: researchers, educators, and students, as well as development practitioners, NGOs, and donors.
