Description

At a time when sustainable development is now firmly established across scientific, economic, and political spheres, this book examines the proven or presumed characteristics of this concept in small island developing states (SIDS). Following the goals set at the Rio Earth Summit (1992) and reaffirmed at the Mauritius Conference (2005), the themes of sustainable tourism, coastal and marine resources, biodiversity, energy, and climate change in island environments are indeed among the ongoing concerns of the relevant governments and international organizations. Far from presenting a generic model or a one-size-fits-all solution, this collective work analyzes the possibilities for preserving these fragile spaces based on their specific physical, geographical, political, socio-economic, and cultural characteristics. The book’s chapters are diverse, addressing varied and complementary topics and issues. From the Azores to Réunion, from the Caribbean to the Balearic Islands, whether rich or poor, located in the South or the North, independent or linked to a distant metropolis, the islands are described here in all their diversity, offering concrete insights into the prospects for implementing sustainable development in Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
