An international organization that supports farmers in strengthening their control over food systems based on biodiversity

GRAIN is a small international nonprofit organization that supports the efforts of women farmers, men farmers, and social movements to strengthen community control over food systems based on biodiversity.

This support takes various forms:

• independent research and analysis,
• building networks at the local, regional, and international levels,
• and the promotion of new forms of cooperation and alliances.

Our work focuses primarily on Africa, Asia, and Latin America, and we have an active presence in these regions.

GRAIN’s role dates back to the early 1980s, when activists around the world began drawing attention to the dramatic loss of genetic diversity on our farms, which was eroding the very foundation of global food security.
