Fact Sheet: Reducing Soil Erosion Through Conservation Tillage

Ekolo Mundo does not control the feasibility or viability of the proposed solutions

Structure : Working Group on Desertification (GTD)

Solution proposed by : Cyril Mercier

Difficulty level :

Description

The primary goal of conservation tillage is to limit soil erosion and increase water infiltration. The term can be misleading, as it does not involve traditional plowing but rather shallow soil cultivation without turning the soil over, leaving crop residues on the surface. This technique is also known as “minimum tillage.” * We invite you to complete this section.

Background

In the tradition of small-scale African agriculture (hoe plowing), this technique spread to larger areas in the Americas in the 1970s, and then to sub-Saharan Africa in the 1980s.

Location

Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Madagascar *

Effects of the technique

Limits water erosion and evaporation by covering the soil with crop residues Limits mechanical erosion by not disturbing the soil structure Promotes water infiltration into the soil Reduces the time and physical strain of labor

The Desertification Working Group is a network of French actors in international solidarity and development committed to combating desertification, led by CARI
