Description

Many municipalities use tree planting as a natural solution to address the challenges of climate change. This approach helps lower temperatures by combating urban heat islands, supports biodiversity, and improves the quality of life as well as the physical and mental health of city residents.

Trees in the city—whether standing alone, in a row, or in an urban park—depend on their interactions with the organisms associated with them in their leaves, wood, and soil, as well as on their connections with neighboring trees and the urban ecosystem. Closely linked to human activities, urban trees and urban forests are subject to specific management practices, the challenges and methods of which have evolved over time.

The urban environment presents constraints but also offers opportunities for tree growth. In turn, trees and forests help shape the urban environment, providing benefits for human populations, making them both ecological and political entities.

This book is intended for an informed audience, particularly students and faculty in the life and environmental sciences, geography, sociology, and political science. It will also be of interest to urban planners, green space managers, and municipal elected officials.
