Description

 What is a Repair Café?

Repairing together is the idea behind Repair Cafés, which are open to everyone. Tools and materials are available at the Repair Café location to carry out every possible and imaginable repair.  Clothing, furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles, dishes, household items, toys, and more. Additionally, volunteer experts are present at the Repair Café, who have knowledge and expertise in repairs across all sorts of fields.

You bring in items from home that are in poor condition. And you get to work alongside the experts.  There’s always something to learn at the Repair Café. Those who don’t have anything to repair have a cup of coffee or tea, or help repair an item belonging to someone else.  You can also always find ideas at the reading table, which offers books on repair and DIY.

Why a Repair Café

We Europeans throw away a lot, even things that are barely damaged and would be perfectly usable after a simple repair. But for many of us, repairing is no longer the norm.  Especially the younger generations no longer know how to do it. Repair skills are rapidly disappearing. This loss is a threat to a sustainable future and to the circular economy.

That’s why we have the Repair Café! People with repair skills are appreciated as they deserve to be.  Valuable repair skills are passed on. Repaired items can be used for longer and are no longer thrown away, reducing the consumption of raw materials and energy needed to manufacture new products.  This also reduces CO2 emissions. Because manufacturing new products—and recycling them—produces CO2.

The Repair Café teaches people to see their possessions in a new light and to rediscover their value.  Repair Café volunteers also visit schools to teach repair classes. In both ways, the Repair Café contributes to a shift in mindset, a prerequisite for a sustainable society built by everyone.

Above all, the Repair Café aims to be a fun and rewarding experience for repairs that often turn out to be very simple. Come and give it a try!
