The Chemins de Faire association aims to raise awareness among a diverse audience about the issues of reuse, ecology, and manufacturing, with the goal of transforming perceptions of environmental impact. We encourage DIY projects, repairs, the implementation of self-sufficient energy solutions, and a fresh perspective on waste, which we view as a resource to be recovered.
Through its traveling initiatives, the association offers training in the use of hand tools, particularly for woodworking. These workshops aim to collectively build furniture, group games, devices for greening public spaces, and autonomous systems. This traveling approach allows us to engage with diverse audiences and inspire a desire to create and build things oneself.
At our permanent workshop in Ariège, we offer training dedicated to the design of self-sufficient systems for the home. These sessions provide participants with the opportunity to learn how to use basic tools for woodworking and metalworking, while developing practical skills that foster self-reliance.
By fostering encounters with artisans, the association promotes traditional know-how and techniques, thereby contributing to the preservation of artisanal heritage. These exchanges can also inspire and encourage a career path toward manual trades.
We wanted a fabrication workshop that could be set up on any site, using locally available raw materials to transform them into objects or building materials without relying on infrastructure or access to electricity. Our goal is to design a self-sufficient workshop, minimize our electricity consumption, and rediscover an often-forgotten energy source: muscle power.
We design self-sufficient machines that operate without electricity, powered by a pedal mechanism. This mechanism drives various tools for working with wood and metal, cooking, grinding, and much more, offering practical and eco-friendly solutions.
These machines, true experimental objects, offer us a playful approach to questioning tools and our relationship with energy. Their development is part of an action-research approach, combining practical exploration and critical reflection.
These machines are documented in the form of open-source building instructions, allowing anyone to freely reproduce, adapt, and improve them.
