Outlining the 10 Golden Rules of Reforestation for Coral Reef Restoration
Efforts are accelerating to protect and restore ecosystems worldwide. While trillions of dollars in ecosystem services are at stake, there is no clear framework for developing or prioritizing approaches to coral reef restoration, even as efforts and investment opportunities in this area are multiplying worldwide. Restoration can buy time to mitigate climate change, but it lacks rigorous guidelines to achieve scalability and effectiveness. Lessons learned from the restoration of terrestrial ecosystems can and must be rapidly adopted for the restoration of coral reefs. We propose how the 10 golden rules of effective forest restoration can be adapted to accelerate coral reef restoration efforts based on established principles of resilience, management, and local stewardship. We summarize the steps to follow to undertake reef restoration as a management strategy within the context of the various ecosystem services provided by coral reefs. The development of a clear action plan is timely, as more and more stakeholders are seeking to undertake restoration as the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration begins.
