Making urban agriculture an essential tool for creating sustainable, thriving, and inclusive cities

Convinced that urban agriculture provides relevant and effective solutions to the many challenges faced by cities, the AFAUP, the French Association for Urban Agriculture, works to promote its development throughout France

To this end, AFAUP pursues three key missions:

1. Coordinate the network of sector stakeholders

A network of over 120 urban agriculture professionals, a network of 15 committed local authorities, and a network dedicated to urban agriculture stakeholders in the Île-de-France region

2. Providing knowledge on urban agriculture

Publications, presentations, studies, reports, etc.

3. Communicate widely

To all audiences, particularly through advocacy efforts and the organization of the 48-Hour Urban Agriculture Festival

AFAUP coordinates the network of urban agriculture professionals with the aim of facilitating mutual support and the sharing of best practices and to “build momentum.”

All forms of urban agriculture and all techniques are represented within the network.

Urban agriculture 

It brings gardened and cultivated spaces to life and creates fertile environments for nature in the city and local agriculture.

Urban agriculture encompasses all agricultural practices that take place in and around cities and for which there is an alternative use (green space, recreational space, real estate project, energy park, etc.).

The 3 characteristics that distinguish urban agriculture

1. Location

The fact that it is located in an urban area, a zone where agricultural production is subject to specific constraints (pollution, accessibility, zoning regulations, limited sunlight, vandalism, etc.)

2. Proximity

The interdependencies and connections that link the city and agriculture through the supply of food and the many services provided to city dwellers

3. Production techniques

Due to the specific characteristics of the urban environment and the need to adapt, production techniques are diverse: market gardening on living soil, container gardening, soilless cultivation (hydroponics/aquaponics/aeroponics), open-field farming
