Description

INTRODUCTION

In a world now facing the threat of climate change and pandemics such as COVID-19, linked to the destruction of natural habitats, how does research help address the global challenge of preserving biodiversity?

Intended for a broad audience, this book consists of short, illustrated texts accessible to all, each presenting research that addresses the major issues of our time: climate change, emerging diseases transmitted by animals, land use, deforestation, invasive species, sustainable food systems… It demonstrates how the biodiversity we seek to preserve cannot be understood apart from the connections that bind it to the human societies that live with it, use it, manage it, destroy it, and sometimes protect it. It also highlights scientists’ commitment to a science capable of producing useful and actionable knowledge—a science of sustainability—that can make the Earth sustainably livable.
