Description

Mountain glaciers are currently retreating rapidly and significantly, raising concerns that some of them may disappear within a few decades. This trend could have major consequences in terms of socioeconomic impact and environmental risk. Thus, due to the challenges associated with their retreat, but also because they serve as valuable indicators for assessing climate change, glaciers are at the heart of major scientific programs on global warming. The primary objective of this book is to present the findings of this research to a broad audience through a comprehensive overview of the state of glaciers worldwide. Ice and glaciers, as records of past climates, are placed in a long-term historical context spanning 10,000 years, with particular attention to the Little Ice Age (14th–19th centuries) and the contemporary period, which is the best documented. For anyone interested in the future of glaciers and the environment in the face of climate change, this book offers well-documented scientific expertise, superbly illustrated and written in a style accessible to all.
