Description

Toward a Realistic and Sustainable Energy Transition

Faced with the challenges posed by climate change and the depletion of the planet’s resources, the founders of the négaWatt Association set out to demonstrate that an alternative energy future is not only technically feasible but also socially desirable.

A non-profit association founded in 2001, négaWatt is led by a council of active members, the Compagnie des négawatts, which brings together some twenty experts involved in professional activities related to energy. All members speak and act in a personal capacity within the association.

négaWatt: a term coined by Amory Lovins, an American expert in energy strategies and founder of the Rocky Mountain Institute, to broadly refer to energy not consumed or saved through energy conservation or efficiency measures.

Our vision is based on the négaWatt approach, a common-sense strategy built on three pillars. First, it involves reducing energy needs through frugality in both individual and collective energy use. Efficiency then makes it possible to decrease the amount of energy required to meet these needs. Finally, priority can be given to renewable energy sources which, through ambitious yet realistic development, can gradually replace fossil fuels and nuclear power.

Based on this approach, the association has developed an energy scenario for 2050 that outlines a possible evolution of our energy system. Building on this forward-looking work, the association also advocates with political and economic decision-makers to ensure that a genuine energy transition is implemented.

Convinced by our analyses and drawn to our proposals, many people—including energy professionals and informed citizens—have joined the association, which now has nearly 1,600 members, representing a key pillar of its growth and sustainability.

The association’s staff currently consists of about twenty people.

The négaWatt Association is independent of any political party. No entity (company, association, local government, institution, political party, etc.) is involved in the association’s decision-making bodies.
