A community-driven, socially responsible supermarket in Paris

We weren’t satisfied with the food selection available to us, so we decided to start our own supermarket

The selection of products at La Louve is guided by six criteria, some of which may seem contradictory:

• Environmental impact
• Local sourcing
• Fair trade
• Taste
• Price
• Responsibility to meet the neighborhood’s culinary needs.

La Louve therefore offers a majority of organic, artisanal, or local products, but also items found in traditional supermarkets, as well as exotic products.
This allows members to choose where to shop based on their tastes or budget.

The range of products offered at La Louve is constantly evolving.

HOW IT WORKS: La Louve members volunteer to perform the tasks necessary for the supermarket’s smooth operation and collectively hire a few employees to coordinate everything.

In practice, each member comes to help at the supermarket for 3 consecutive hours every 4 weeks to work the register, stock shelves, receive deliveries, clean, handle administrative tasks, and more.

Flexible scheduling is available for members with irregular work schedules (such as those in the performing arts, for example).

Any member may suggest products. Any member may inform others and discuss issues they deem important, but no single member or small group of members may prohibit the sale of a product. The decisive factor guiding employee-buyers in their choice of which products to keep or discontinue is sales volume: the most democratic tool that accurately reflects the actual purchasing habits of all members.
