Description

Intended for both the general public and specialists, this guide identifies 81 species of snakes known to occur in the Sudano-Sahelian and Saharan regions of West Africa (Senegal, Gambia, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger). Identification keys facilitate the identification of families and species. For each species, a fact sheet provides a detailed description of distinctive characteristics, as well as information on ecology and potential risk to humans. Each fact sheet is illustrated in color and also includes a geographic distribution map, as well as a diagram of the head’s scales. A specific chapter is devoted to the problem of snake bites and their treatment. A synthesis of fifteen years of research, this guide—which features photographs of rare or little-known species—provides new scientific information on the composition and distribution of West African snake fauna.
